Instead of the recent trend for even bigger industrial farms specialising in one single crop or livestock, smaller and more varied farms offer greater opportunity for sustainability (“Agro-ecology and the Right to Food” – United Nations, 2011). Smaller farms can be less resource intensive, less fossil fuel dependent, allow for greater biodiversity, greater employment and be more equitable. More research and government support needs to go into mixed farms, and smallholdings.
