Local and National Policymakers, Local Businesses
The public sector of the Irish State has considerable purchasing power, spending about €15 billion on goods and services every year. The private sector (businesses, etc.) would have an even greater annual budget for buying goods or services. This significant combined purchasing power can be used to choose environmentally friendly products and services, and thus help stimulate a critical mass of demand for more sustainable goods and services. Simple examples would be the City Council or a local business insisting that they only purchase recycled paper, green cleaning products or energy efficient computers. This green public procurement is a strong stimulus for eco-innovation and can help create a more resource-efficient economy.
